William Robert Charlton, 1886-1918
Hi, and a warm welcome to BritGen...
Ancestry's brief record shows that William Robert Charlton was born in Morpeth (and a quick check on FreeBMD that his birth was registered in that district in the March quarter of 1886). He enlisted at Newcastle-on-Tyne and, as you already know, was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He was in the 447th Field Coy. He died on 12 September 1918.
If you go to The National Archives (TNA) and search the online catalogue, Discovery, you will find that there are twelve hits for his name in the years 1914-1918 - all Medal Index Cards, but none with the exact number that you gave (which also appears on Ancestry). You will need to investigate.
Sorry, but that's as far as I've got and it may be a reprise of info you have already. Off to roost now.

William J Charlton
Regiment or Corps - Royal Engineers
Regimental Number - T/3022, 457850
I think this is the the most likely candidate and just as with ancestry has mistranscribed the middle initial it is possible the last digit has been written on the original medal card image wrongly or the CWGS has mistaken a 0 for a 9. So on the original medal card the middle initial is R.
You can also see the medal cards on The National Archives site but ancestry's are in colour and show both back and front of the card although the back does not always have any extra information.

Thank you to Christanel and the wideeyedowl for your help. It is very much appreciated. My friend had found the 'death penny' for Wm Robert and we became intrigued by his story and wrote a song about him. It is good to know more. I will search further. Best wishes.

The "Soldiers Died" database shows his casualty type simply as "died" rather than "died of wounds" or "killed in action". "Died" often implies disease = perhaps the 1918 flu pandemic. His death certificate (obtainable from Overseas Section of GRO) may clarify matters.
