    Default ABRAHAM HOFFNUNG-ESTHER LEVEY

In this new thread I will post data on Abraham Hoffnung 1834-1912; his wife Esther Levey 1839-1917 and their children. This post should be linked to previous threads relating to the children of John Levey and his wife Gertrude Lyons. As a recap, the Levey lines relate through marriage to several Jewish families including the Marks, Hart, Langley, Hoffnung, Goldsmid amongst others.

There are a range of records online which describe Abraham and his brother Sigmond's considerable achievements both in business and in the promotion of Jewish causes in the USA, Canada, UK and Australia. These accounts record Abraham and Sigmond as being the sons of Rev Samuel Hoffnung and his wife Caroline from Kalisz Poland. Rabbi Samuel Hoofnung arrived in England circa 1836 where he became minister and cantor of the Jewish community in Newcastle upon Tyne and later in Exeter. Samuel Hoffnung was also the first minister of the German/Polish Synagogue established in Montreal in 1859- see The Gate of Heaven. The Story of the Congregation of Shaar Hashomayim Montreal - Rabbi Wilfred Shuchet, 2000 ( online extracts of the book

Samuel Hoffnung died in 1878- The Jewish Victorian. Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers 1871-80 transcribed and edited by Doreen Berger, 1999 Pub Robert Boyd- Death on Sabbath morning last 14.12.1878 at his residence 9 Westbourne Park Villas aged 74, former minister of Exeter and Cheltenham Synagogues.
Abraham Hoffnung had settled in America as a young man and later married Esther Levey daughter of John Levey and Gertrude Lyons in Montreal. Abraham Hoffnung also spent part of his later life in Hawaii and travelled to Australia where his brother Sigmond was established in business in Sydney.

The British Census from 1871-1911 show Abraham Hoffnung with his wife Esther and familiy living in Liverpool and London and later Berkshire.

This is a follow up to #3 of this thread. Another researcher has kindly sent me further data which indicates that Caroline aka Carrie Hoffnung had been married first to Francis Kenelm BOUVERIE. There is data on Francis Kenelm Bouverie regarding his other marriages and treatment of his wives. In addition, there are Criminal Records for his involvement in other issues.
The UK Civil Divorce Records show that he married Caroline Hoffnung in 1882- 5 September 1882 and they had 1 child Kathleen Maude Bouverie born 27 August 1883. The Final Decree for Divorce between Caroline and Francis occurred 16 June 1885 but he had married Blanche Minnie Myers a minor of 19 years and upwards but not 21 years in 1887. However, a marriage record for Dec qtr 1884 St Geo Hanover Square 1a 854 shows another marriage.
Kathleen Bouverie appears in the 1911 Census RG14 3575 176 (Copyright TNA) at 14 Park Lane Teddington Surrey - she is a visitor age 27 single no occupation recorded in the house of Murry Pain.

Francis Bouverie appears to have left the UK and I have yet to discover what happened to him.

The North Wales Chronicle Saturday 5 May 1888 was one of the newspapers who recorded the trial of Francis Kenelm Bouverie for fraud and bigamy- he was described as " A young man of 26 residing at Delapre Abbey Northampton... twice divorced for adultery.... application made by his third wife for desertion and cruelty.." This was part of the trial in which Blanche Minnie Bouverie nee Myers had sought to raise the issue of bigamy by her husband... " The first wife a young lady highly connected, was still alive. Her marriage was solemnized on Sept 5 1882 at St Peters South Kensington. The next marriage of Mr Bouverie was to Annie Walker on December 5 1884 at St George's Hanover Square.."
Between 1882 and 1887 Bouverie had married 3 times and all 3 wives were alive.
Blanche Minnie Myers aka stage name Blanche Belle had no children from the marriage. By June 1888 Francis Kenelm Bouverie had left the UK but where he went was unknown. In 1880 there is a passenger record for Francis Bouverie arriving in Australia so it maybe that he returned and assumed another name. He acknowledged according to Blanche that he had other children by 3 women so the totally number of children he fathered is likely to be unknown as is whether or not he "married" again. The involvement of his mother in fraud was also referred to in the 1888 trial but both were acquitted.
I have not described in any detail the nature of the trial for fraud but the data is on line via the Old Bailey and in newspaper accounts.
My own interest in the Hoffnung lines is via marriages to one of my Hart paternal lines and also through further links between the Hart/Levey/Pincus/Hoffnung families through marriages.
