George Chester abt. 1855 married & died in NZ (have NZ info on George) (death cert says England) but marriage cert says Australia, parents Charles Chester, occup "farmer" & Margaret (no maiden name). I found a birth for a George Chester 9 Jan 1859 Adelaide, with parents Charles Chester & Margaret Hall. Another child to this couple is Richard Chester 1861 Adelaide. Unable to find any other children or Charles & Margaret in Australia, theres a poss that Charles & Richard came to NZ, but not Margaret. The only marriage I could find for a Charles Chester & Margaret Hall was on the family search site - 22 Aug 1847 St Peters Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Unable to find them on the 1851c, so if this is Charles parents when did they travel to Australia, did they have any other children ??? No sure if Im clutching at straws here.
Ive searched for days and unable to prove the above. Shipping records may help, but I cant find anything. Help.
(A little info on George - he married Mary Beeston (nee Hunt) she was a widow 1883 NZ, he died 1936 NZ)

Hi
I can't see anything specific for your Charles and Margaret in South Australia as yet. SA also does not have electoral rolls on line.
I wonder if your George came to OZ with his parents as a young boy hence the variation as to where he was born on the certificates.
Cyndi's list has some helpful links for researching in Australia.

Hi Christina, I think I have found George's father. Charles Chester was in the 40th Regiment in Adelaide. The regiment came to NZ 1862-1863ish. I don't know when the children came (George & Richard), and I don't think Margaret came. Theres a news item in NZ papers past which made me think this was Charles, George's father. This Charles Chester, had been a farmer, and a soldier. I found another item on the Australia Trove papers: Adelaide 27 Dec 1862 - Child desertion - Margaret Chester was ?? the information of her husband. Charles Chester a ?? in the 40th for deserting her child. Looks like she got to keep the child, but Charles wanted no more to do with her. Hes then gone to NZ with the 40th reg. They had as far as I could see 2 children. I think Margaret stayed in Aus as I see another court case involving her in 1867 Adelaide. I am now looking to see what happened to Margaret, and the children, I think both boys ended up some time in NZ

Margaret chester was Hall and I have found desert Charles and two sons in NZ possibly to search for the two left in SA...John and William the elder two sons who where born in Yeovil, Somersetshire in England. Two youngest born in SA and placed for sometime in an orphanage in NZ until collected by Charles....assume this happened when Margaret deserted them.

Charles Chester m Margaret Hall and they had 4 sons, William born in England, John born in Melbourne shortly after arrival in AU, George and Richard born in Adelaide. Family shipped to No leaving William and John in South Australia as they ran away at time of family leaving or shortly before as obviously not wanting to leave. William has many descendants on the who have spread from the West Coast of SA where he married and began family life.. We have just had a reunion here at Streaky Bay SA and material for book will be sent to printers shortly. We are aware of our NZ and Aboriginal cousins and they will be included.
