'Grandma' Bateson was one of the people my grandparents' generation talked about but who I hadn't been able to place.
I was hoping to help date a photo on here the other day and went hunting through the old photos which I hadn't looked at for years, and came across a photo of my (great) auntie Betty's bete noir, 'Aunt Jane' who I thought had remained a spinster. Fortunately, my mother had noted Jane's married name on the back of the photo.
Today, I found the marriage: Jane Gillibrand (not Jane Partington) and James Bateson, 1887, Bolton Register Office, so Grandma Bateson was Jane's mother-in-law. A small success, but satisfying.

Yaaayy! Thank goodness your mum bothered to write on the back of the photo! I tell all my family...."write details on the back of photos!!" People think they will remember names, dates etc but 30 years down the track it could be important to have these details.
