Question Catholic Church in Newchurch, Lancashire

I am trying to determine if there was a Catholic Church in the areas of Stacksteads and Newchurch, Lancashire during the period of 1850 to 1892. I am aware of St. Joseph in Stacksteads, but that was founded in 1892 - after the period I am looking for. My ancestors who lived in the area were originally from Ireland and I believe they were Catholic. I'm looking to identify the church they may have attended so that I can see if they are listed in any of the parish records.

There was St Mary in Bacup - see here. https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Bacup/StMary.shtml

Also St James the Less in Rawtenstall. https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN...stheLess.shtml

Fill in the boxes across the top, I'd search for Stacksteads as I believe there's two places in Lancs named Newchurch.

“Salford Diocese and its Catholic Past” by Charles A. Bolton. Published by Diocese of Salford (1950) states -

ST JOSEPH'S, STACKSTEADS, AND ST PETER'S, NEWCHURCH
This mission was established November 1892, and was formed by Newchurch being cut off from Rawtenstall, and Stacksteads from Bacup. ...

You realise that St Joseph's has closed. The 2014 Salford Diocesan Almanack states that its registers are at St Peter's, Newchurch in Rossendale. Earlier replies have suggested that for records of your family in the period you seek, you would need to be looking at St James the Less, Rawtenstall, or St Mary, Bacup. As Stacksteads was cut off from Bacup, St Mary, Bacup, would be the more likely church. It is the policy of the Diocese of Salford that old registers no longer needed for religious purposes should be deposited in the Lancashire Archives in Preston for safe keeping and easier public consultation. Sadly the Bacup registers have not yet been deposited and none have been transcribed, so you would need to contact the parish for help. With a decreasing number of clergy, many are finding that there is not time to answer family history queries, so you may not get a response. The address to contact is -

    The Parish Priest,
    St Mary's Presbytery
    Dale Street
    Bacup OL13 8AP

You may be able to find the information you seek, easier and quicker by looking at LancashireBMD (https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ ) This is an index (a work in progress) to the local Registrar's registers which are the primary record of Births Marriages and Deaths - the GRO index being a secondary record. LancsBMD provides some additional information that can be useful.

    Hope this helps

    Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)
