    Default Transportation

My Gt.Gt.Grandfather was found guilty of stealing from bales of cotton in Liverpool in 1828 and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. I have traced him to two prison hulks in Portsmouth in1829. Can anyone tell me if some prisoners 'did their time' without actually being sent anywhere as I can find no further details.
In1840 he was again in prison in this country. I cannot imagine that he would have had the finances to have
paid his passage back to the U.K. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
