Default 1851 census sidges lane encampment tankersley

Hi I have a 1851 census entry H0107/2334 f532 p17 regarding Sidges Lane Encampment Tankersley South Yorkshire, I take it that this is the site of a gypsy encampment and wonder if anyone else has knowledge of relatives on this site at the time of this census?

I know this will sound flippant...here today gone tomorrow?!

Romany are as we know travelling folk and follow a circuit ( even today Appleby Fair being the most notable gathering.)

Some 'residents' didnot like to think that they had romany on their patch, you will very rarely find them at the start or middle of a census return nearly always at the end in a field on the wayside in an Inn's yard etc!

If your interested or curious have a look at this BG thread for an insight into their lives..........one thisng is certain most are baptised/ married / buried and can be found in the parish records.

    A statement of fact!

Their names in the enumerator's book have been crossed out.

So they were crossed out because they weren't residents of the area just passing through, was this done by the enumerator?

We don't know why it was crossed out and we don't know who did it.

As I am quite inexperienced in this maybe you could help me to understand the implications of this crossing out, have you seen this crossing out before or is this rare would you say?
