    Exclamation Horton Asylum admissions 1905.

    Hi,

l have found my GGrandfather's son was admitted to Horton Asylum in 1905 as a pauper lunatic, l'm not sure what that term means, but does anyone know if there are records which would show why he was admitted and when he may have been released or even if he died still in there. He's shown in the 1911 census as still been a patient there but l can find no other trace of him after that.

    Thanks very much.

l'm not sure what that term means
Well, a lunatic was someone who was mentally ill and a pauper was someone without any source of income who relied on support through the poor law system

but does anyone know if there are records
The Hospital Records Database knows! Was Horton Asylum in Epsom? If so see

    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/h...chdatabase.y=0

You want "clinical and patients" records which are at the LMA.

    LMA say -

Hospital records are subject to a period of restricted access in order to protect the
confidentiality of living individuals. It may therefore not be possible for you to
consult all the records yourself. We are able to undertake research on behalf of an
individual to provide information from hospital records but we do have to ensure that
the information is only being released to either the individual concerned or in the case
of a third party request that the patient concerned is deceased. We do charge for
undertaking such searches within our records.
We suggest that in the first instance you contact the enquiry team who will be able to
advise you on how to proceed with your particular enquiry.

Thank you Peter, as he was born in 1875, l would hope that any records the LMA may have would be available to look at, l shall get in touch with them to find out exactly what they do have on the asylum.

    Thanks once again,

    Val.
