HI on the 1881 census ref (rg11/1710) my ggrandad George York b1855 Bow Middlesex is listed as a Fireman Stoker on the N L Rly. can anyone tell me more about this please? I know nothing about what this job would entail or if anyone could find his employment history that would be FAB.

My OH says you have the right railway. A fireman stoker put coal on the fire in the engine. He thinks a liftman either worked in a warehouse with goods or possibly at a big station with people. The lifts had two layers of grilles acting as doors and these had to be pulled back in turn. The lifts were very wide for fitting station trolleys on. It was a very responsible job, either dealing with public safety, or making sure that a lift wasn't overloaded if it was carrying goods. cicilysmith
