Whilst looking through the baptisms of St. Philip & St. James Plaistow (on another mission!) I noticed an odd occurrence, that being, in a very short space of time several children were being baptised, of unmarried mothers from the same address of 26 Howards Road.

A quick search of this address showed it was the Plaistow maternity Hospital.

What saddened me was that on the 23rd March 1919, twins Eileen & Arthur (I haven't added surname in case they are still alive) were baptised with no parents names at all, however there was no mention of them being foundlings (and they did have a surname recorded).

Of course their births may have been registered with a mother's name recorded on the birth certificate, but it seemed odd to me that it wasn't mentioned in the baptism register as the other single mother's had been.

but if you suspect you ancestor was born at Plaistow Maternity Hospital, St Philip & St. James appears to be the church that was used.
