Hi, I am descended from Woodfine Smith through his son Zachariah who married an Ann Davis.
According to Josephine Tombs book on Smith family history p6-7 they had 9 children.
My Great grandfather was Joseph b. circa 1833-43 (married Coralina/Catherine Holland).
My grandfather was their son Matthew. I have not been able to trace any birth or marriage details for Joseph or Coralina/Catherine. She is named as Catherine on Matthew's birth cert.
Joseph and Catherine produced: Lydia/Myra/Woodfine/Matthew and Stephen.
Can anyone shed any light on Joseph and Catherine???

There is a public tree on Ancestry which has an original image of the marriage between Woodfine SMITH and Sarah BOZWELL on 5 September 1811 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire. Are these Zachariah's parents?

Tynedale
Hi Waitabit, Tyndale translated the King James bible into English! My contact name is TYNEDALE which is the upper river valley of the Tyne. I lived there for a while and named my kiwifruit orchard here in N.Z. after the area. I emigrated to NZ in 1962 and have recently discovered my ancestry to a point.......
Matthew was born 11/7/1881 at Hanford (Stoke on Trent) Staffs.
I do not know marriage date or place of marriage of his parents Joseph & Catherine (Holland) hence my enquiry.
My research indicates that Joseph was probably born between 1837-1846 based on the birth years of siblings. Catherine uses many variations for a first name and her ages at census dates are equally confusing. Any assistance rendered would be very much appreciated.

Hi Sue, Yes! Woodfine and Sarah are Zachariah's parents. The spelling for Sarah is usually BOSWELL. I haven't seen it with a ' Z '
before.

Just to get my head around this and looking at the censuses it is no wonder Joseph is hard to find
Joseph in black, Caroline (variations of) in red.
1871 born c1844 Cheadle Staffordshire. c1846 Coventry Warwickshire
1881born 1845 Longton Staffordshire. c1847 Longton Staffordshire
1891 born c1839 Warwickshire place NK. c1838 Warwickshire NK
1901 born c1853 Longton Staffordshire. 1854 Longton Staffordshire
It may be worth noting that in the 1871 census their first daughter Lydia age 5 is down as born Blythwash Warwickshire. Does this give any credence to the birthplace of Caroline being W/wickshire as in the 1871 census?
Also in 1871 Caroline has the middle initial A.

Thanks for your interest. Joseph's wife is an elusive character to say the least. She has a different name at every census and her age never computes either. In 1871 please note that your comment, " she has a middle initial ' A ' " .... in fact it appears as a small ' a ' and perhaps the enumerator thought her name was Carolinea or Carolina. In 1881 she is listed as Catherine. In 1891 she is listed as Curaleoner and 1901 back to Catherine.
There is a Catherine Smith death in Stoke on Trent in 1908, age 62, giving a yob of 1846 which ties in with the 1881 census. Of all the 19th century census indexes, the one I have most confidence in for accuracy is the 1881 because it was transcribed by genealogists.
Re Lydia's birthplace, " Blythwash " Warwickshire; I have checked the Warwickshire place names and cannot find any beginning with Blyth..... Tombs in her book states that " Coralina " was born c 1835 in Coventry, Warwickshire. Joseph is listed in 1891 as being born in Warwickshire too. It must have been after the birth of Lydia 1865 that they moved to Staffordshire as their next child, Myra was born in Longton, Staffs in 1869.
Finally, I have obtained birth cert for their son Woodfine and mother's name is listed as Catherine.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello Tynedale
There is this site that has quite a bit about Woodfine SMITH in the post ( 9 pages)
https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum...t=10821&page=9
Suggest you google .co.uk the name to see all the 'members' of the family looking for help.
Whilst not a Romany I do have limited information on romany in general...what I do know is they change their names both forename & surname, the boys invariabley adopting their mother's maiden name, I am away at present , but will have a look up on my return home
Going to google books brought this interesting titbit up
