Martha Hodgson was born 5.8.1828 and believed to be daughter of Jeremiah and Catherine Hodgson, farmers Lincolnshire. I do not have confirmed birth parents or marriage details.
My questions are: Was she 'adopted' by fathers brother, Robert Hodgson and wife Stella (Sorlie)? I can't find death certs of parents and marriage of adoptive parents ( I doubt there would be records if relatives 'took care of her') Other info tells she was daughter of a doctor? And who did Martha marry?
There are soooo many Marthas, and Roberts, and Stellas, and Hodgsons in 19th century England I can't find my way through them all. I am hoping the answers about them will give me a link to go forward with my searches.

Hi dian
You have Martha's exact birth date - where did you get this? Where do you first sight Martha? Marriage? census?
Where did the names of possible parents come from?
How do you know Robert is Jeremiah's brother? Census records?
Do you have any of these people in the censuses? If you do can you give us the year, piece, folio and page number?
Sorry, I have more questions than you. but we need a starting point.

I can't remember if I have replied earlier. Have too many projects going on at the same time. Apologies if I have taken so long to reply.
I have no census information or nor other confirmation.
She 'may' have arrived Point Henry on the Larpent 28/6/1849 (info from a past family historian, not confirmed). I have searched but cannot find any passenger list for this ship. She 'supposed' to have been 'brought up by Stella & Robert Hodgson, Otley, Yorks. Her parents are 'supposed' to be Jeremiah and Catherine Hodgson, farmers Lincolnshire, or the daughter of 'a' doctor.
That's all I have except an encyclopaedia of Marthas and Hodgsons i cannot make definite connection with. The above ifo is all the starting point I have for her British history.

This arrival date is a year out and so is Martha's estimated birth year but that is nothing in the scheme of things.
The ship's name Serpent could have been mistaken for Larpent if someone was reading the original image and the writing was awful. The same thing could have happened with the arrival date.
The spelling of the surname depended on how literate the writer was, whether they understood Martha's accent and spelling hadn't been standardised back then.

Christanel, isn't it a bit unlikely that Robert H, butcher and Robert H, gentleman are the same person. There's a big gap in the social status....
Mind you, it's also unlikely that there's 2 Robert & Stella couples .... A nice problem!

Welcome aboard Lesley.
I posted the marriage record and then left it to do domestics but I was intrigued by the 'Gentleman.' Then again maybe he thought that being a butcher gave him entitlement to being a gentleman as compared to the occupation of Benjamin!
Now I will see if I can find another couple called Robert and Stella or better still if I can't find another one.
