Does anyone know if it is possible to look at the archives of Eastwell Manor? I am trying to find out what went on in 1911.
My grandfather, Walter William Dagless (b1885) worked there as a groom. In January 1911 he married and gave his address as Eastwell Manor. His bride was living with her father in Boughton Aluph on census night, but I can find no record of him anywhere. His military service appears to start in 1915, so I was wondering if he was away on a visit with the owners of Eastwell Manor.
Any thoughts?

There are no archives of Eastwell Manor listed under the Kent Archives Service. This appears to have been a genuine manor (not just a fancy title) so it may be worthwhile contacting the Manorial Documents Register at the National Archives. The register is partly computerised but Kent isn't yet included. In my experience, they respond helpfully to email enquiries. The parish is Eastwell of course.
I suppose you could contact the current management of Eastwell Manor but I doubt if it's worth the effort (unless you also wanted to book a room for the weekend )

Many thanks for that, Peter. I'm off to sit in a field for a couple of weeks this weekend, so I'll look into that when I come back. Hadn't previously heard of the Manorial Documents Register, but it sounds promising.
Once again, many thanks.

Re a possible employer for Walter William Dagless -
Dover Express 24 Feb 1905 -Eastwell Park leased by Lord Gerard for 10 years to Mr H J King, South African millionaire, owner of several well known racehorses
Exeter + Plymouth Gazette 13 April 1911 (Census taken 2 April) - Lord and Lady Northcote are about to take up their residence at Eastwell Park ..... latterly has been in the occupation of Mr and Mrs H J King who recently concluded their tenancy
The Dover Express 2 Jun 1911 - Eastwell park .... Mr H J King, the late tenant has taken Wilton Park, Beaconsfield.
Haven't been able to trace "H J " on the 1911 Census at either location. In trying to establish "H J's" given name came across -
Sheffield Daily Telegraph 26 Jan 1911 - Mr "Natty" King .... recently trained a winner in Servitus on his father's estate at Eastwell Park ..... "Natty" is described as the "Graham House" trainer.
Found "Natty" on the 1911 Census and probably 1901 which led to the 1891 Census - RG12 17 21 38 and Head of Household is an
H J King, Merchant, born America. So, still haven't identified "H J's" given name to help pinpoint him in 1911 (with/without WWD).
( "H J" has 2 children on the '91 Census born South Africa)
