    Default Direction Island?

Nothing to do with my own research, but as I've been trawling WO 363 (WW1 Service Records) my curiosity has been aroused ...

Where usually the soldier's regiment is noted, Percy Douglas ABBOTT's cover sheet simply states "E.T.R", which I assume is "Eastern Telegraph Reserve" - the heading on his Attestation Sheet, which is dated 20 July 1916 and was completed at DIRECTION ISLAND.

He was discharged 16 April 1917, in consequence of "HAVING LEFT THE ISLAND".

    Can anyone explain?

Not sure whether this will help or not, but it seems to fit:
