    Default Arthur Henry Bennett

I'm looking for my great uncle Arthur Henry BENNETT, b. 12 Nov 1871 in Co.Mayo, Ireland.

Although he was born in Ireland, I think he would have regarded himself as English, as his parents were both English (his father was a coastguard).

He appears on the 1891 Census as a draper's assistant, working in a store in Northampton, England.

After that I have been unable to find any trace of him in UK or Ireland.

A few years ago I came across a website for A H Bennett Company in Minneapolis, MN. The home page mentioned the company's founder Arthur Henry Bennett and showed some images of him. I bookmarked the page, meaning to come back to it soon after and contact the company.

For many reasons I was unable to do that and it was only recently that I revisited the website. The single web page now states that the business was sold in 2010. The images are still on the web page, the hover captions naming Arthur Henry Bennett.

I realise this is a long shot but I would appreciate it if somebody could find a way to verify if it is my Arthur Henry or not.

    A couple ofpieces of info.
The web site says Arthur Henry founded the business in 1922.

On the original image of this record it says that Arthur Henry is married and is an asbestos salesman which would tie in with him establishing a roofing company?

It would indeed, christanel. Many years ago I worked for a company producing prefabricated concrete garages which were roofed with asbestos cement corrugated sheets. We used 10s of thousands of sheets (if only we had known!). As far as I recall the product was invented in the 1920s.

Thank you for the extracts, I think that is probably the right man and not my Arthur Henry.

Yes, he's with the rest of the family (apart from eldest brother Joachim, who was by then on the Morecambe Bay Light Vessel).

A bit of a breakthrough! Every so often I go back and search again, in case I have missed something or new records have become available. In this case it was the latter: British India Office records on FMP.

Arthur Henry BENNETT married Eva Margaret MILLER October 8th, 1898 at St Peter's Church, Fort William. Calcutta.

Arthur Henry's profession is given as Draper (he was an assistant draper in 1891).

His father is named as Joseph Hourll Bennett. This is odd because, whilst Arthur Henry's father was Joseph BENNETT, his brother was Joseph Howell BENNETT.

The above information is from the handwritten record of the Ecclesiastical Returns for St Peter's Church.

I am reasonably confident (there is some supporting anecdotal evidence) that this is my man but would like some more verification to be certain.

Will there be a civil marriage certificate in existence and, if so, from where should I obtain it? I feel that the answer is staring me in the face but I just can't see it!!

Maybe another red herring from familysearch.org

The marriage is also on line at familysearch.

Thanks geneius. I had already noted that one for future reference.

Eva Margaret BENNETT remarried (register office) in Calcutta on 27th April 1904. This means she was either divorced or Arthur Henry had died. I'll recheck her second marriage for clues as to her status.

Yes, Arthur Henry's father Joseph was a coastguard. Two other siblings were also born in Ireland.
