    Default MONTAGUE HENRY MOSES DEATH

On the current range of family trees available online there is no reference to the precise death date for Montague Henry Moses son of Henry Moses and Rosa Hart. He appears with his wife Caroline and his children in the 1891 census at 36 Houndsditch ( I will post on this and earlier census data). In addition, he appears as a witness in a trial which was described in The Standard Sat Feb 3, 1894 and described as Montague Henry Moses 36 Houndsditch clothier.
His wife Caroline was a widow in the 1901 Census - RG 13 196 60 13 ( Crown Copyright,TNA) living at 125 Petherton Road Islington

I cannot locate the death record for Montague Henry Moses but it appears he died between 1894-1901. Caroline Moses died Sept qtr 1919 age 74 Paddington 1a 6. Further records suggest that 36 Houndsditch was put up for lease circa 1897 which may also indicate a possible death date for Montague.

    Default SYLVESTER MOSES-SYLVESTER MORTON

On thread "Henry Moses-Rosa Hart" #6 reference was made to the surname change of Sydney Benjamin Moses to Sydney Morton. Currently, I have not seen any Legal Records indicating the name change but there may however be an indication in the following newspaper accounts relating to a Sydney Moses clothier of Houndsditch. The accounts do not give the address of Sydney Moses and further research would be necessary to confirm that Sydney Benjamin Moses aka Sydney Morton and the person referred to in the articles are one in the same.
The Daily News Tues Aug 27,1895 and Berrow's Worcester Journal Sat Oct 19, 1895 refer to the court case of Sydney Moses a Houndsditch clothier convicted of assault on Miss Nellie Bobbett a dress maker who he was once engaged to. Sydney Moses received 21 days hard labour for the offence.
There are Court Records including prison records which would provide fuller details to confirm the precise identity of Sydney Moses.
It maybe that a surname change may have occurred because of the prison record if ( and the emphasis is strongly on 'if') Sydney Benjamin Moses and Sydney Moses the clothier of Houndsditch are one in the same person.

Default MONTAGUE HENRY MOSES aka MOSS DEATH

Free BMD have the Death Index Record for Montague Henry MOSS age 65 March qtr 1900 Islington 1b 319. In the light of the Moses family surname changes to Morton and Moss and the matching dob of Montague Henry Moses 1834 it appears likely that he is the same person as Montague Henry Moss.
The GRO Death Certificate would confirm whether or not they are one in the same.

Wow... this is great. Phillip, thank you so much for all of this data, I have been struggling for ages trying to find anything on the Caroline Woolf line.
I did a search on the JewishGen website for Moss Woolf and found that somebody had posted almost the same information, in particular the marriage of Caroline Woolf and Montague Henry Moses with the same date, but named Moss Woolf's wife as being Priscilla Mordechai.. not Solomons. The rest of the names and dates tally so it would certainly seem to be the same family. I have sent a message to the poster ( I don't know who they are yet) hoping to find out where they got their information from. I am wondering whether they either have the wrong maiden name for Priscilla somehow, or whether Mordechai may be an older Hebrew name that got changed or substituted somewhere along the line? A mystery at the moment!
