In Windows 7 if you go to Default Programs from the Start Menu the first heading is Set your Default Programs. If you click on it all the programs are listed and you can set your default Mail program from there. Hope this helps.

Thank you Dickins for your suggestion.
I did try this and did find the mail section but what I found was four boxes two were ticked when I tried to untick them it would not allow it.

Geoff I cannot understand that. On my Windows 7 if I set Mozilla Thunderbird (my preferred option) as the default program it overrides Windows Mail which then shows as 0 of 4 options selected when you click on it. It works the same on any other default programs I use for different activities.

I am happy to report that I have solved my problem of default mail.
The problem was I subscribe to BT broadband which gives you BTyahoo mail.
BTyahoo does not register on the default pages, and neither did yahoo. The answer I was given and it worked was to download and save a Yahoo tool bar with a mail plug in, uninstall the BT and Yahoo tool bars plus the yahoo updateer Then install the new tool bar ticking the box for the mail default. After doing this the default mail programme showed Yahoo as a mail default programme and it works, Walla!! Geoffs a happy chappy
Thanks to all for your help and advice
