    Smile Thomas Conner (policeman) 1792

    Hi Genealogists,
This is my second post. I was amazed and pleased at the replies to my first.
I am trying to get information on Thomas Conner who was a policeman(1792).
He was born at sea (It says "unknown" where born) and spent some of his life at Chorlton Work house.
He must have worked for the police the required number of years because it states he was "superannuated".
I'm not sure but I think Chorlton is near Stoke- on- Trent (Cheshire) area I could be easily wrong?
If you could possibly show me the way to find more information I would be extremely grateful.......Thanks dylan........:-)

    It says...
What do you mean by "it"? It's hard to comment without knowing this. If it's a census record, please provide the reference.

Chorlton Union (ie with a workhouse) was in the Manchester area. Stoke-on-Trent is in Staffordshire.

I have a had a quick look at the census returns sadly I cannot identify ThomasCONNOR b 1792 as being a policeman. i can find Chelsea Pensioners and one living in Chorlton, who is a Shoe maker!

More info please including the next generation...so we may pick up on the census returns

    Hi Friends

Actually, there are two 'Chorlton' districts in Manchester. One is almost inner City and is known as Chorlton on Medlock (Medlock being a river but in that area not as you will imagine a river) and then there is Chorlton Cum Hardy, "newer" than the former and about 4 miles plus from the City centre. In the early days of the C19th. it may have been close to an area of "well to do"
and later, it would have been home to a lot of Irish migrants and would have been a "rough" area. Chorlton cum Hardy would have been "in the country". My wording may not be 100% accurate, but hopefully I given you a glimpse of the two areas.

I think there may have been previous postings mentioning Chorlton Workhouse, but I could not find such mention.

    Regards Jack
