    Default SHAW: John Devonshire England

John Shaw was born b.Nov 8 1824 Devonshire England

    CDN CENSUS:1881 SHAW John 50 , wife Jane 28, 3kids
CDN CENSUS 1891 SHAW John 64, wife Jane 37, 4 kids

BIRTH: birth date shows on death register and birthplace of Devonshire England.
MARRIAGE: October 1873; John age 42, Jane Calvert age 22..John lists his parents as Thomas & ______ Shaw.
John stated that he was a widower on the marriage record and listed his occupation as a painter.
DEATH: Ontario Vital stats death registrations and lists his place of birth as Devonshire, England.

story handed down was that he had wife and kids in England...came to make a home in Canada and would send for them. what happened no one knows. we could speculate til the cows come home and still not know for sure.

    1. she could have died and kids stayed with her family.
    2. they decided the marriage would end.
    3. she did not want to come to canada.
    4. anyway, he ended up finding another bride and life carried on.

As you can see I have info in Canada..just need to find him in Devonshire and emigrating if possible.

One such John Shaw islisted in 1841 census as:

Devon St Andrew Royal Marine Barracks
District: St Andrew Mill Bay Barracks Plymouth.
    Private 53rd Regiment

It doesn't give marital status. Perhaps you can find him from there in reebmd marriages or similar?

so it looks as though John SHAW married Amelia Sarah GRIFFIN in the March qtr 1861.

In 1871, Amelia SHAW 36, wife seaman, was living with her mother Amelia GRIFFIN and brother Charles GRIFFIN 19, also in Devonport RG10 piece 2133 folio 78 page 17. John was not at home.

    Default John Shaw

Many thanks to all of you. Sure looks good and I do not want to get too excited in thinking you have found my ancestor John Shaw.

I have been disappointed so many times with John as well as other ancestors.

All of your posts are helpful and worthy of further research.

    DOB7 listing is most interesting…
    1. overseas british canada…is promising… being a seaman, may be a possible avenue to do more research.
    2. his first child with wife in Canada named amelia emily
    3. his wife Amelia Sarah Griffin married 1861 would fit in with possibility he was married before his marriage in canada.
on Cdn marriage register, he listed himself as widowed, so either amelia died or he chose that marital designation.
Amelia is living with mom and brother 1871, John not at home. This was 2yrs before he married in canada.

Tho not sure what Stoke D vol 5b page 583 refers to.

    Waitabit….
John Shaw is listed in 1841 census as:

    a. would be interesting as to where his middle name of brolaw comes from.
    b. his father is listed in our family files as Thomas, maybe his wife was named Emily
hence first child named Amelia Emily
    c. not sure how to go about doing research for seaman, any guidance would be appreciated.

brolaw is an abbreviation for brother in law. Given places of birth I would think that Amelia & Caroline are sisters.

    There is a marriage
    Sep 1855
GRIFFIN Caroline Emma Stoke Damerel district
on same page - PEARCE Robert

    Hi again lorilou

Having read this thread, I think it highly unlikely that John Shaw the Royal Marine in 1841 and John Shaw the Royal Navy Seaman in 1861 are the same person.
And as the Navy man was born in Canada, he's probably the one you need to hunt down.

Royal Marines and Royal Navy are not the same thing.

A minor mystery, are Lorilou & Shaw.Shoo one & the same or related?

I've just visited some of Shaw.shoo's posts from 2007:

    INFO SO FAR:
His birth info: Nov 8, 1824 in Gates London England ..or.. c. 1831 Devonshire England. Tho, we are leading toward Devonshire info as we could not find a Gates London England.

He married Ann Jane Calvert 1873 in Hagerman Parry Sound Ontario Canada and had family. The marriage certificate said he was a widower and a painter. His father’s name was Thomas and John could not remember mother’s name. (Possibly she died when he was young). Even though his birthplace noted as Devonshire he says he is of Irish descent. So possibly his father is Irish. John died in 1898 same area and his death registration also says birthplace Devonshire.
Rumour has it that he left wife and children in England with intent to bring them out.

I have found him on 1891, 1881, and almost sure it is he on 1871 (age 42 b.1829) Ontario Censuses. From there nothing!
By bringing these early posts to light, someone with London knowledge may find a baptism in the right area on Ancestry or FMP. (Newgate)?

His age changed a few times so his birth was probably reg. 1824/5 but he wanted to be younger for his bride
I wonder if his name was Thomas John & he dropped it off , or perhaps took the name John to start anew, alone?
the Irish question could help maybe, perhaps he didn't start out in Devon but was last situated there.

If you found reasonable birth'baptisms on Familysearch, you can then try for a viewing of their films if you have a Family search Library nearby or a relative or friend who can do so for you.
    Happy Families

The Gates, London could refer to any one of many London Parishes named after the 'gates to the old city walls'. For example, Cripplegate, Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Aldersgate, Ludgate, Newgate, etc., See https://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/LND/parishes.html for some examples.
