    Default Hector Dass Skipper Grimsby

I could not find a death for Hector Dass, then in 'Lost at Sea' found an entry for him February 1908 LOS Flannen Near Uist. Is there any way to find out which trawler he was sailing on?

I don't know about that particular Trawler but he was the skipper of a the British steamship " SPANIEL," in 1900

Find my Past has him on the Heloia when he died, but I think this is a transcription error and it should be Helois.

There was a Grimsby trawler with nearly that name . . . the 'Helios' (GY784, registered 1903, broken up 1951):

Edit: but there was also a trawler called 'Helcia' (GY152) which might be mis-read as Heloia.

The 'Helcia' does seem to be a contender, for some of its crew were swept overboard in a storm in 1908.

'The Times' of 7 March 1908 had a long column under the heading
'SEVERE GALE. WRECKS AND LOSS OF LIFE'.
    It included this paragraph:

'The steam trawler Helcia, belonging to Grimsby, was
brought into Burtonport, Co. Donegal, yesterday, after
encountering very rough weather in the Channel. The
vessel lost her captain, first mate, pilot, and one deck
hand, who were all swept off the bridge somewhere in the
vicinity of Rockhall Reef. For three days the remaining
members of the crew were without fire, food, or dry
clothing, the engine room and pumps being completely
choked with coal and other matter. After three days'
suffering and hard work, they succeeded in clearing the
engine room to some extent, after which they got a little
steam and started the pumps, and succeeded in bringing
the vessel to the anchorage off Burton port, where she
    now lies.'

I think you have cracked it, not helped by my own transcription error! The date of death was given as 29h February 1908, which ties in nicely with the story in the Times.

Compare these two reports of the incident appearing in -

    Manchester Courier 7 Mar 1908
LLoyd's Agent at Burtonport, Co. Donegal, telegraphs: Steam trawler "Helcia", of Grimsby, put in here with the son of the master and three men. Vessel greatly damaged, and pumps blocked

    Western Times 7 March 1908
Lloyd's Agent at Burtonport, Co Donegal, telegraphs that the steam trawler "Helcia", of Grimsby, put in here with the loss of the master and three men. The vessel was greatly damaged, and the pumps blocked

My great grandfather Thomas Webb was on the trawler Helcia, I have a copy of a certificate dated 28th March 1908 stating ‘Thomas Webb, deceased, ex ‘Helcia’. Thank you for the above information.
