John Atherton, Wigan 1781

[Derek Atherton]

A John Atherton born in Blackrod, WIgan 1837 was the son of Edmund Atherton of Blackrod Farm and came to Australia as a child with his family. They arrived in 1844 in Sydney. John was a cattleman and discovered tin on the tablelands that would later bear his name. The area was named eventually named after him - the Atherton Tablelands. I live on the Tablelands now and his descendants are family friends.
