    Default Tracing Private R. Dean

I have been given 3 medals that were in my Grandad's possession and have established that they are from World War I.

One of the medals is tagged with the name W.G. Pitcher who I have discovered was the uncle of my nan, but the other two are inscribed with the name Pte R. Dean.

I'm guessing that R. Dean had some link with my family in some respect but I can't seem to link him at the moment.

Any ideas as to how I might be able to do this?

    Hello Robin,

Does the medal for R. Dean have a service number on the edge of the medal as well? If so, you may be able to trace service records wherein there may be clues. Have a read of this TNA guide.

I'm not sure what the service number would be but the writing on the ri says "3816. PTE. R. DEAN 1-LOND. R."

The same text is on the back of a medal that is in the shape of a star.

I think there may be a set of records for him on Ancestry, in their "British Army WWI Pension Records" series. At least, there's a match coming up when I search in the index for a Richard Dean with service no. 201388 (which is given as well as no. 3816 on the medal roll card). If this is the right Richard, the papers should give you some more clues about who he was.

I've looked at the papers and still cannot find a link. There is a next of kin named on image 8953 as Margaret ..... who is listed as his sister. I can't make the surname out though.

I wonder if he lived locally to my ancestors as his discharge address was in Notting Hill and they lived in Kensington.

I believe it says Margaret UPTON

There was a Margaret DEAN/Hugh UPTON marriage in 1910, Liverpool district. This is from a quick search though and so I don't know if it all ties together. Possibly in the 1911 census here ...RG14/22224 SN123.

Does it say how old Margaret was as Richard was born in 1889.

That could be Richard's sister! The place of birth is a strong possibility and also the year of birth!

Still need to work out a link between the Deans and my ancestors!
