Oooh oooh, I think I might have found him

FMP has a 19 year old Mr Arthr T Hine leaving London on 21 August 1895 on the 'Rimutaka'. Though the ship was bound eventually for New Zealand, Arthur is being shown as contracted to land at Cape Town.
(The original list shows him as 'Arthr' too, the last 'r' being written superscript.) His occupation is given as barman.

P.S. so it seems quite likely he may be the A.T. Hine who was in the Cape Town Highlanders in the Boer War.

Oh, well done. He followed in his father's footsteps then.

    Hi again Tony

I'm afraid I know very little about tracing Boer War soldiers: I tried searching the National Archives' catalogue for Cape Town Highlanders but the only things that came up were medal rolls. Perhaps if you post a new query in the Boer War subforum then some military experts will come to our rescue. There are specialist military discussion forums too: you could try the Victorian Wars Forum.

The fact that there's no obvious death registration for him in the GRO index may mean that he died overseas. Our South Africa experts may be able to advise on how to go about looking for deaths there.

I think this means that he had a Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal with a Bechuanaland clasp. This is explained here:

    https://www.
    angloboerwar.com/non-boer-war-medals/292-cgh-gsm

You can see a photo of such a medal and details of the Bechuanaland rebellion here:

    Hi Tony

I don't know where you'd look for records of the Cape Town Highlanders before 1899. Volunteers from the Cape Town Highlanders formed "A" Squadron of Kitchener's Horse in 1900, according to this site:

    https://www.
    justdone.co.za/SAMU/Info_Units.php?UnitID=106

so it may be worth you investigating WO 126 at The National Archives, Kew. WO 126/85 covers surnames H-L for Kitchener's Horse. This info is from

    https://www.
    genealogyworld.net/boer/forces.html

There are transcripts for some WO 126 lists online but I can't see that bit of Kitchener's Horse.

As for South African BMDs I don't think they're online . . . we will have to wait for a South Africa expert to help out on this one, as I don't know where to look.
