Yes! That is what his place of birth was in the 1871 census. I can't see a family to link him to in the 1841 and 1851 census apart from the one mentioned above. Am I missing something??
Thanks Coromandel.

I should have thought Buxton would be too far north to be described as "near the town of Derby".
Looking on Family Search again I found a James Maycock
Baptism/Christening Date: 27 Jun 1837
Baptism/Christening Place: HOLY TRINITY,COVENTRY,WARWICK,ENGLAND
Father's Name: William Maycock
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Anna
Given the 1871 entry giving Buxton as place of birth, could we be dealing with two different families with similar naming patterns?

That is the same family I found in the 1841 census. They seem the only likely ones.
Looking at Genuki there is also a Parish of Breaston and another of Burnaston both are close to Derby.
Why oh why is the writing so bad for 'parish of birth'.....
His place of Attestion was Coventry on 11 Oct 1854 and he gives his age on that date as 17 years, 11/12 months - very precise!
Thanks again

Looking at a map of the area Graham I think you are right about Buxton being too far away from 'near Derby'. Looking at the image Burnaston looks the most likely.
