Default Boilersmith / Railway Engine Tuber

    Hi Folks

I am reserching a Watson family of March in Cambridgeshire. In the 1901 Census Henry Watson is described as a Boilermakers Assistant in the 1911 Census he is still at the same address of 9 Hutchinsons Row in March he is described as a Railway Engine Tuber and on the marriage certificate of his son in 1917 he is described as a Boilersmith.

Does anyone know if these occupations are related, and how I could find out more about an employee working for the railways.

    many thanks

    Richard

The three occupations are indeed related. It would appear that your ancestor followed one of two paths to becoming a Boilermaker, the first one being (at the time) a seven year apprenticeship, and the second (usually a progression for older persons) was an improvership lasting from 10-12 years.. I think that your ancestor followed the latter path. I am afraid that I cannot help you with Railway info as I am having problems finding info on my own great grandfather who was a Boilermaker at the Swindon works.
