    Default JAMES MOFFATT

I am trying to go back to find James Moffatt born 1804 in Dumfries (I think). I have him living in Warrington and getting married there and his death in Preston, Lancs. I have all the family following his move here, but I cannot trace any of his scottish ancestry beforeh e came here, any ideas?

I see a James Moffat in the 1841 to 1861 census in Warrington. Born in Scotland about 1804.

    Is this him?

    When did he get married?

It's just that if the James in the census is your chap, then I see a possible marriage to an Elizabeth Locket in 1839 at St Wilfrid, Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire. He is a widower. Occupation is joiner. Bride and groom are both of the parish of Penketh, (which is near Warrington.) His father is George Moffat.

There are also a couple of children christenings, but I'll leave it there for the moment, in case I have the wrong James.

Yes that is my James. He wasa joiner and lived in Back Irlam Street Warrington originally after moving from Scotland. He lived in Warrington until his death in 1871. Those are the names of his wife and children so definately correct. They had 6 children Ann, Elizabeth, Thomas, George, Joseph and Richard. I dont know the date of marriage only that his wife was called Elizabeth and I believe she was born in Warrington.

If you go to the Lancashire OPC and search for the marriage of James Moffat in 1839, you will see the marriage I mentioned above.

I also saw this christening ...

21 Dec 1845 at St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire
    Richard Foster Moffat
Child of James Moffat & Betty
    Abode: Irlam Street
    Occupation: Joiner

This birth record should give you Elizabeth's maiden name ...

    Birth Dec 1845 Warrington 20 928
    Moffat Richard Foster

I also saw this earlier christening on the Lancashire OPC - and wondered ...

11 Sep 1831 at St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire
    Elizabeth Moffet
Daur of James Moffet & Margaret
    Abode: Scotland Road
    Occupation: Joiner

There was another interesting christening - but I'll let you search and have the fun of discovery.
