It makes better sense now with your additions/corrections Kerrywood. I don't think I would have got that scrawly 'neglects' on line 4. Also I had no idea what that LS (locus sigilli) was. Thanks very much.
Good thing there isn't a page 6; I've had enough practice for the moment. Sigh of relief.
Now to figure out who all those people he named are.

I see that the wonderful Kerrywood has cleared up the queries on the last page for you. But none-the-less a fantastic effort by you which I hope gives you confidence to try other documents too.
The National Archives has some very helpful guidance in reading some older styles of script and also interpreting Latin - click here - so if you get stuck you've got ready help in a couple of places.
Now to figure out who all those people he named are.

Cheer for the link Geoffers. I had a go at some of the exercises for practice since I have a number of wills to figure out. A very good resource. Then I had a go at another Sargood will. Not convinced I've improved since I think the handwriting is easier on this one - there are fewer words that stump me.
I'm probably being cheeky now but can anyone fill in the mystery words for me? It's much shorter really !!!

Good thinking. I was reading it as an I but a J makes much more sense. Also, on family search pilot - an Edward Justice married an Eleanor Pocock in 1741 in Wantage. This will was written in 1762. Hmm!
The next part has me confused - 'of Sutton in the said county of Berks'. Is there a Sutton in Berks? Perhaps Sutton Courtenay (now in Oxfordshire).
Ah!! Just found a marriage licence record for Edward's marriage to Eleanor. Both were from Sutton in Berks. So looks like a good call Thomasin.Last edited by olliecat; 17-11-2010 at 8:21 PM. Reason: Added last line
