WOOD family in World War 1

Hi

I am keen to find out what happened to a number of my great uncles during World War 1. Unfortunately there last name is Wood and my grandmother (who was their niece by marriage) doesn't know very much except that a number supposedly died.

In the 1901 census their father Charles Wood (born in London abt 1852) and mother Hannah (born abt 1854) are living with their children at Vivash Road, Portsmouth. The children are:

Edith (aged 20)
Charles (aged 15)
Frederick (aged 14) - I know Frederick survived WW1 but would be interested in knowing if he served
Thomas (aged 13) - my great grandfather. The family history is that he didn't serve but this not confirmed. If he did serve, he survived.
Arthur (aged 10)
Emma (aged 8)
Walter (aged 6)
James (aged 5)

So there are possibly 4 sons who were killed during the war. But because of the last name I am not sure how to even start trying to identify them.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

They are on the 1911 census, different address but still Portsmouth.

Does your Grandfather have a middle name, there is a soldier on 1911 that fits him prefectly but he has a middle name, James?

Looks like Arthur is in the service to..Royal marines

Charles to. Looks like 3 of the sons were in the service before WW1 started.

There is a note attached to Arthur on 1901 census informing he was killed seving above HMS Invincible 1916, apparently there is a memorial on Portsmouth Naval Memorial

if you search the Portsmouth Naval memorial and search his name you will see him..sad so young.

Thank you so much for this. The service makes sense - the family story is that their father was in the Navy.
