Yes Hugh, that's my great grandad. I do have lots of info on our family in Australia and have visited the family homes and graves in Toowoomba many times. It's just John Anthony's arrival in Australia I'm missing. While it's just a smal part of his history. it would be good to have a date and ship's name if possible. So far no luck. I guess it's just possible that he came via another country between 1861 and 1870 when I know he was living in Toowoomba, Qld. A cousin has the old family bible which is where we got all our birth and marriage dates from. Much more reliable than some other web sites I've found.

Thanks Philippa, I've been told that some records are patchy, particularly if the person you're searching for paid their own way to Australia. Also some of the records stored in the Qld Archives were lost due to flooding of the basement when the Brisbane River flooded in the 1970s. The decade I need, 1861 - 1870 were among those records lost. I will try Canberra as you suggested.

Hi Robelaine, This is an interesting find. Chesk out waitabit's answer to my original query on page 1 of this thread. He found John on the Conference too but then found what he thought was the same person at a later date on other ships, maybe as a professional sailor. That was at a time when I know my great grandfather John was definately in Australia, living in Toowoomba. It would be good to see the original of the document you found. I will send you my email address in a private message. Thanks for your help.
