    Default Bradshaw Brickwall

    Hello everyone,

    I have hit a brickwall while trying to research my father's side and connection to the Royal Navy.

    My GGG grandfather was George Edward Bradshaw born in 1855 and was a Steam Engineer Fitter in the Royal Navy do not know date of death or much about his service. Also, I cannot find any information on his parents.

    George Edward Bradshaw was married to a Fanny Lipscombe I think but I am not sure if this is correct if someone would be so kind to offer any help I would really appreciate it.

    Right.
    Have found George Junior in 1891

    Fanny P Bradshaw 34 Sussex Brighton
    Joseph J Bradshaw 13 "
    George W Bradshaw 10 Hants Portsmouth
    Arthur J Bradshaw 5 "
    Daisy F Bradshaw 4 "
    Albert E Bradshaw 2 "
    RG12; Piece: 857; Folio 42; Page 16;

    His birth:
    Dec 1880
    BRADSHAW George William Portsea 2b 438

    In 1881
    Fanny Bradshaw 24
    Joseph Bradshaw 3 Scholar
    George Bradshaw
    RG11; Piece: 1143; Folio: 141; Page: 32;

    George Senior's marriage
    Mar 1878
    BRADSHAW George Edward Brighton 2b 303
    Lipscombe Fanny Sarah Brighton 2b 303

    As he married in Brighton, I would suggest this is him in 1871
    Joseph K Bradshaw 46 Publican Lancashire Patricroft
    Elizabeth Bradshaw 48 Harlington Middx
    George Bradshaw 15 Surrey Hakham (I think it actually says Hailsham, which is Sussex)
    RG10; Piece: 1073; Folio: 86; Page: 34;

    Will carry on looking

    I'm having problems finding them in 1861 or Joseph in 1851.

    Ooo heck. I've hit a bit of a brick wall and I've got to do the dinner now.
    Back later.

    Have you searched for his service record and, if appropriate, downloaded it?

    His service record is also likely to lead you to where you can find his parents.

    Looking at Documents Online for his service record (as suggested by Peter) reveals a candidate born in New Cross (ADM 188/122), which in turn leads to this:

    1861 census (record held by TNA, crown copyright)
    RG9/392 folio 74 page 23
    Dennetts Road, St Paul Deptford
    Joseph Bradshaw Head M 36 Engineer (Railway) Manchester L'shire
    Elizabeth Bradshaw Wife M 40 Middlesex Harlington
    Martha J Bradshaw Daur 13 Surrey Kennington
    George E Bradshaw Son 6 Scholar Kent Deptford
    (indexed by Ancestry as BRADSHER)

    I would suggest this is him in 1871
    George Bradshaw 15 Surrey Hakham (I think it actually says Hailsham, which is Sussex)
    Presumably Hatcham (the Surrey part of Deptford).

    Which could fit with this birth registration:

    George Edward BRADSHAW, December quarter 1855, volume 1d, page 505, Greenwich district - which covered both Deptford St Paul and Deptford St Nicholas.

    Thanks for your help everyone I'm looking into your findings to see if these go with what I have. Also, this may be a silly question but why would the last name be changed to Bradsher was it just because the handwriting on the census was misread?

    another quick question I have found the Fanny P Lipscombe but I was getting confused as later it seems the only Fanny that would fit would be Fanny Sarah Lipscombe, is this still the correct person?

    These censuses are typed up as the transcriber sees them. Often as in this 1861 case, the handwriting is cramped or otherwise hard to read. The transcriber has to do as well as they can. Very much like our FreeBMD trannies do & doubtless freereg & parish records trannies.

    Similar errors happen with the pronunciation of names in many types of index recording.

    Something for us to gripe about but how nice to have them!

    Perhaps the same reason, bad transcribing of the letter 'S'
    I just had a look at the 1891 census. Definitley an 'S'. If you look again at the image, the name "Stanley" just above has the same style of 'S'.
