I found it
He was in the Infant Orphan Asylum- Hackney. Ref:H0107/698/13 P3
Why would he be there.? Unless his parents died, or left him.

Just found another William Gibbons b.1838 Stepney, so the one in the Asylum could be him.
Maybe they did leave the country.

Yeaah June!, now I can wander of & find out what I did today, or just ready up for bed.
Then I read your last post......there are many instances of a Mary Anns' death around the times of Williams birth & soon after. so far found no instance of a Jonathans remarriage except Lincolnshire way 1846 & that was followed by a death in 1852.
Still must away to bed.Last edited by Waitabit; 10-03-2010 at 10:10 AM. Reason: Add a bit.

I think there was another large family of Gibbons in Lincolnshire.
I've often thought I'd found Jonathan but then found he was born in there.
Can I ask again if anyone has access to shipping records.
Thanks

Hi June,
There was only one John/athon Gibbons/Gibbins entering NSW as a single man and born Tipperary. There was one arriving as an Unassisted immigrant in 1853 who was born in 1820 but he came alone and I can find no apparant family arriving separately. Good Luck!

Thanks for that Jane.
Can I ask where the immigrant in 1853 came from?

I'll happily find out for you but, depending on where I have to look, it might take a couple of days. (It may just be online - I can't remember and I don't have time this morning!)

Hi June,
There are actually three men who I will check. They are on microfiche. I've noticed that Ancestry has this index for Australia but they didn't have the images last time I looked. Don't get your hopes up because they are all unassisted immigrants coming into Victorian Ports. You may get no more than the age BUT you might be lucky.
John Gibbons:
1. age 33 per 'Rose Ann' March 1853 from NZ
2. age 33 per 'Australia' Feb 1854
3. age 26 per 'W.B. Dean' Mar 1854 (probably too young)
The last two are marked as coming from 'Foreign' ports. The indent should state what that port was in each case.
You can search this index - and others that might be useful at:
prov.vic.gov.au/ (put https://www DOT in front).
Go to the section marked 'How do I...' on the homepage. It's easy for me to read the indents but you have to wait until I'm going to one of the two local libraries that have them.

Hi Jane
Thankyou for taking the trouble to look for me.
I went onto that website and found a jonathan arriving 1853 on the ALBUS Fich 008 P001. However it didn't give his age which was probably why you didn't mention it.
I also looked on Ancestry but I don't have worldwide subscription.
Thanks again

June,
I missed him as I didn't search for Jno! I'll look to see that one too. Another arrival from a (F)oreign port. I've never had any arriving from anywhere other than (B)ritish ports so am unsure how much info. is given. If you find any more potential lookups, I will be attempting to go on Wednesday or Friday next week so let me know before then.
