Hello, I'm trying to trace back any further than William Mann, born Smethwick 1833. In the 1881 census he was registered a publican living at Broomfield, Harborne, though I cannot find any info on this dwelling nor can I trace his parents names or any further back. If anyone can help I would sincerely appreciate it. Many many thanks!
Karen

Welcome to the forum Karen,
You seem to be sure of 1833 birth year but not of parents so you must be working backwards from verified census records?

Regarding the Broomfield Tavern. this is listed in Hitchmough's "Black Country Pubs" at an address of 7 Broomfield. Broomfield now seems , from Google earth, to be a street of modern houses, but apparently it was on the south side though it is not shown on the 1890 (https://www.british-history.ac.uk/map...m=1&x=79&y=308 ) or 1901 maps. Apparently William Mann was definitely there from 1872 -1884. No other licensee is listed here, but the author doesn’t claim to have complete records, so there could be earlier licensees. Certainly Alfred Richards was licensee from at least 1890. Apparently William issued tokens from the pub.
Incidentally, it may be completely different people, but, although there is no mention of a William Mann in the licensed trade in Birmingham directories in 1855, 1858 or 1868, in 1862 there was ;
William Mann, retail brewer 56 Fazely St
William Mann, retail brewer 14 Harding St, Summer Lane

thank you so much!!
I'm overwhelmed with your responses, thank you so so much everyone!
Deborah - yes I'm working from the 1881 census so know that William was definitely born in 1833. Looks like this is definitely him listed as the brother in law in 1851, living with his mother Hannah Mann who was 61 at the time and born in Doncaster. Can anyone help me find any more info further back than Hannah? I had no idea the family had connections to Doncaster, that's really interesting.
Lizzy - if this is the William I'm looking for, and that tallies with Deborah's finding that his mother was called Hannah, then William would have been 3 when he was baptised and his father was called John. How can I trace any more info about the father John?
Mikejee - this is really exciting to actually have a proper name and address for the pub, in fact my husband and I lived quite close to there a few years ago with no idea! I just looked up the CD Rom - ss there any other info on this such as images etc that would make it worth buying? Thank you so much for this, it's nice to have a place to visualise them.
Just an enormous thanks to you all for your help, it really means a lot.
