Just had an emu from A*******Y.
Asking me if I would like to transcribe for them.
Anyone else had one.
Your views please.

My personal feeling is that I would rather transcribe for a non-profit organization i.e. a genealogy group. Even if you receive "credits" for your work on the WAP, I'm sure it would be slave wages.

Yes I got one too. Waste of time asking me as though I should like to do it(for interest)I wouldn't have a clue what to do.
Also I think I do enough for A....... correcting all the mistranscriptions I find ....and they didn't even give me a cheaper sub when I re-subscribed. Marie

I've been doing this for a month or two now. It gives you a chance to get an early sight of some new data sources (if anyone comes across Percy Willson the postman, he's my gu), and also makes you a bit more appreciative of the problems of deciphering handwriting. They say the results will be on free access, so you're not contributing to their profits. There are 20-30 projects currently on the go, not all in English, and most of those that are are American.
They provide a keying tool, which whilst it has some useful features, can be painfully slow to use, as it keeps dialling home. The rules for data entry aren't well documented and take a bit of getting used to. You gain/lose "points" if you get it right/wrong, but there's no direct feedback on what you're doing wrong. There are discussion boards on Rootsweb where you can ask for help, but you don't always get a reply.
