This site lists all the inmates of the Ararat asylum. There are no EBEINSTEIN or similar named.

To get further back on the Ebensteins I think you need to purchase Nellie's birth certificate. This will give you where and when her parents married as I can not find the event in the Victorian indexes.
Once you know where they married it may be possible to get that certificate which should give you the names of their parents.
You can purchase the certificate on-line here. It will also be delivered electronically or if you prefer by mail.
If you think that it was Nellie's grandfather (Jos Wm Ebeinstein) who was killed by lightning there is no record that I could find of his death in Victorian indexes.
It is possible that the story has become confused over the years.

Fawkner Memorial Park online database shows that Clara and Joseph are buried together there. Clara buried 5 June 1920 and Joseph 23 Sep 1944.
Uncle Harry was buried 8 April 1968 at the Eaglehawk Lawn cemetery (a suburb of Bendigo) - this can be found on the Bendigo Cemetery Trust online database.Last edited by ChristineR; 09-10-2009 at 4:16 AM. Reason: add more

Could he have been a chiropodist? doing corns and stuff.
I ask this because when I put EBEINSTEIN Victoria into google, up came the Warwick Today newspaper, a UK website. Part of 175th anniversary, shows news from the Leamington Spa Courier 1830-1849.
Part of it says ... Mr W Ebeinstein, Chiropodist, from Warsaw, Begs most respectfully to announce to the Nobility, Clergy and Gentry, that he has arrived at Leamington.
I mention this because a variation of the surname appears in Brisbane, Queensland. The NLA newspaper shows adverts for a chiropodist as well in Brisbane, so wondering if it was a family business.
Just a thought.ChristineR

It's certainly time for robert to purchase the birth certs of Charles Henry HOPKINSON (1880) and Nellie EBEINSTEIN (1887) so that further research can be firmly based.
But, in the light of robert's post #13, I'll just post this census entry now in case it turns out to be of some relevance later.
1851 census
HO107/ Piece 1467/ Folio 653/ Page 58
Star St, Paddington, Middlesex
EBEINSTEIN (transcribed by Ancestry as EBERNSTEIN)
William, Head, 42, Shopkeeper, born Poland
Mary, Wife, 38, born Jersey St Hilliers
Mary, Daughter, 9, Scholar, born Scotland Edinburgh
Joseph, Son, 7, Scholar, born Scotland Edinburgh
I don't see them in later censuses.
There's a family (probably/possibly? the same one) in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1841.

Hi Jap,
Interesting find.
If I have found the correct death of Joseph Ebeinstein at Post #10 and IF his age is correct in the death index he would not be the one in the 1851 census who was born c1844 (again assuming the age entry is correct).
The Joseph in post #10 would have been born c1856.

Hi Procat,
Yes, I had realized that; probably should have mentioned it.
But I thought I'd post it anyway so I don't forget it - who knows, they might be related in some way.
There are quite a few EB*STEINs on FreeBMD.
And in the UK censuses.
It will really be interesting if/when robert gets those birth certificates.
Regards,
JAP
