Hi
I am looking for information on Octavius BAWTREE (abt 1831) and Charlotte June EVANS (1853 - 1893). And D. BAWTREE of Killnstyle, Elmstead, Colchester, Essex married to B. BAWTREE.
Thanks

Hi Michelle,
Same question as in your Postle/Bawtree thread - do you already have Octavius and Charlotte (who I presume is his wife) on the census? And if so, what other information are you looking for?
And do you have any dates for the D Bawtree and the B Bawtree? Even approximate ones are a help.

Don't know whether you made a typo but the GRO marriage index seems to have the marriage of Octavius Bawtree to Charlotte Jane Evans in Colchester RD, September qtr 1873 Volume 4a page 428.
Aha! I see the 1881 census on Ancestry has en entry indexed as Charlotte June Bawtree.
RG11; Piece: 1787; Folio: 36; Page: 20
for West Lodge, West Lodge Road Colchester.
When you look at the actual image the entry has been scored across and there is a note with a reference to a Registrar's Letter that the entry has been transferred to ED 15.
This is at RG11; Piece: 1789; Folio: 15; Page: 24 and refers to the same address:
Octavius BAWTREE 50 banker b Colchester
Charlotte Jane wife 28 b Limerick, Ireland
John Henry son 7 scholar b Colchester
Alice L WILLIAMS niece 31 b Abberton, Essex (on original entry I think it said 'gentleman's daughter'.Sue Mackay

Octavius's family would seem to have lived in Abberton, Essex, where the neice was born.

Is your "D. BAWTREE" David I wonder? In which case it looks as if he was the child of Octavius by his first marriage. Getting the marriage certificate of Octavius and Charlotte would prove whether Octavius was a widower in 1873.
1861 census for Abberton: Class: RG9; Piece: 1102; Folio: 59; Page: 1
John BAWTREE 67 Magistrate for Essex 7 banker b Wivenhoe
Mary wife 64 b Norfolk Colney
Octavius son 30 banker's clerk b Colchester
David P grandson 8 b Kent, Chatham
Jessie M granddau 5 b Ireland
Sarah POSTLE sister-in-law unm 66 b Norfolk, Thorpe
Charlotte POSTLE sister-in-law unm 60 b Norfolk, Colney
Should have added that the Bawtree family always had several live in servants so were obviously well-to-do.
Looks like the family moved about a bit. In 1871 Octavius is still with Mum and Dad in Abberton, described as unmarried. Also at home are the two sisters Emma and Maria. Emma is Emma ROBINSON, a widow, and is there with three children. The eldest, Annie E Robinson (11) was born in South Africa. Emma M (9) and Arthur W ROBINSON were born in Abberton. Octavius' other sister Maria HUNT (38) was described as married so may just have been visiting, or else her husband was off on his travels as wellSue Mackay

The IGI has a submitted entry (so needs checking) for the marriage of John BAWTREE to Mary POSTLE 23 July 1816 in Colney, Norfolk

Michelle,
I should have added that on the 1901 Census, Octavius was a widower and his sister, Maria aged 68, a widow of independent means, hence servants.

There are quite a few mentions of the name Bawtree in the British Library 19th Century Newspaper database.
Ipswich Journal December 10 1859 (in article re Volunteer Rifle Corps)
Mr. Octavius Bawtree received from Sir Claude De Crespigny the appointment of fourth sergeant in the Corps.
Ipswich Journal December 29 1860
The Colchester Corps having exceeded the number requisite for one company, the effective members met on Wednesday evening and formed two companies of equal strength. Lieutenant Green was promoted to the command of the newly formed company, and a meeting was called on Friday evening for the nomination of the other officers; the result was the election of Mr. Octavius Bawtree as Lieutenant and Messrs P.M.
