I hope some of the downundies may be able to help with this query. The background is this:
John Guyett (sometimes rendered as Guyatt, or even Guyet), b. 1822 at East Stratton, Hants, and his wife Sarah b. 1819 at Loughborough, Leics, had six children, John b. 1849, Lee, Kent; Henry Moses b. 1852, Plumstead; Sarah Elizabeth b. 1856 Plumstead; William b. Jun quarter 1857 Plumstead; Thomas G b. 1861 Sydenham and Alice E b. 1863 Streatham.
In 1881 at the time of the census, Sarah Elizabeth was working at housekeeper for two single brothers in Streatham, Charles and Alfred Perrin, and her sister Alice was visiting. Later in the year, Sarah married the younger brother, Alfred Perrin, who was 20 years her senior, and in 1891 they are ‘Living on own means’ in Camberwell (she obviously fell on her feet). Meanwhile Charles Perrin was still in the same house in Streatham ‘Living on own means’, and boarding with him were John and Sarah Guyett, with John down as ‘Gardener’, and their daughter Alice was ‘Housekeeper’. Alfred died in 1892, and by 1901 Charles was living on his own, and died in 1902.
This is where the questions start. In 1901, in addition to her own five children, Sarah Perrin was looking after two nieces, May L(ouisa) Guyett b. 1888 in Tottenham - and Elsie M(aud) Guyett b. 1894 in Australia. Elsie was still living with Sarah’s family in 1911, and her place of birth is given as ‘Hillsville, Victoria, Australia.’
Whose daughters were they? Sarah’s brother John was living firmly in Berkshire with his own family, and the only two possibilities were William and Thomas. I find that Thomas married in 1884, had four children and disappeared. His wife Lilian, down as ‘Wife’ in 1891, died in 1900, and in 1901 two daughters are in an orphanage in Norfolk, his son is epileptic and a patient in Surrey and there is no sign of the youngest daughter. What a tragic little family, and what happened to Thomas George?
So it seemed that Sarah’s brother William must have been the father of May and Elsie, and I found that W Guyett with two children, 1 boy and 1 girl under 12, came to London from Melbourne in 1898 on the ‘Ophir’, arriving on 12th January. I assume that the boy and girl were actually the two daughters.
I could find no trace of William’s outward journey, but details of this were uncovered by my cousin in Australia, who found on the Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria:
March 1890 ship ‘Aigburth’ B 527 001
Guyett Jesseona age 6
Guyett Louisa 35
Guyett Marey 1
Guyett Wm 34
This tied in with a marriage in Jun ¼ in Lambeth of William Guyett and Louisa Valentine. ‘Jesseona’ was most likely Jessima Alice Guyett, b. Dec ¼ Edmonton in 1883. ‘Marey’ was probably May, and Elsie was born later at ‘Hillsville’, which it is suggested could be ‘Healesville’ near Melbourne.
Louisa Guyett the mother and Jessima must have died, although so far we have not been able to find any proof of this, and William himself died in 1900 after bringing the remnants of his family back. If anyone could find the records of the Australian deaths, or any other record of their life in Australia, it would be so helpful.

OUR BOYS' LEAGUE?
Thomas G. Guyett was elected president of OUR BOYS LEAGUE in 1917 (which may refer to support for the soldiers -I haven't read it) and there are some other hits on:

PS Looks like they were funeral directors
There is at least one very early date in the list that suggests a person of this name well before their arrival.Last edited by spison; 04-09-2009 at 4:28 AM. Reason: found more info
