I believe you are correct and that David Cochrane died in Scotland between 1871 and 1881 but getting information from Scotland seems to be difficult.
I have found Arthur and Jane Newell on the 1901 census but I do not know anything about Heneriatte and Andrew Thomson Mason. That information came from a family bible entry. I also believe you are correct in that William Cochrane married Elizabeth Allen in 1876. I am now able to enter this information into my family tree. There is an entry in the family bible (hard to read) that David Cochrane (the son born 1848) may have gone to California, U.S.A. but I haven't been able to confirm that yet.
The search continues.

I cannot find any trace of Henriatta & husband. They didn't marry in England, so can only assume they were in Scotland/Canada/Usa....or somewhere else.

Now I am really excited. Actually David Cochrane (the son) was born in Quebec, Canada as his father David was in the Artillery and the family was in Canada for a few years. I understand Jane and Heneriatta were also born in Canada. This must be the correct David. Are you using Ancestry.com web site to get this information? I think I should get a subscription. Do you think there were any children and may have already left home when this census was taken? It appears he married in California.
I will see if my mother-in-law can tell me anything about Heneriatta.
Thank you so very much. I am going on vacation for about 10 days and will be anxious to get back to my research.

Hi
If David was single in 1880 age about 31 and married in 1900 age 50ish and there are no children on that census, they must have left home before the age of 20....unless they were away.
Would be good to find his marriage.
I do use An***ry, but the full version.

Have found an entry in Québec (Presbyterian) (Saint Andrew`s Church) > 1848
Cochrane baptised:
David Cochrane, Company Sargiant in the Royal Artillery and Jane his wife, had a son born on the second and baptised on the nineteenth day of November one thousand eigth hundred and forty eight named David, by John Cook ,D D Incur (Iooks like),
Signed : D Cochrane, Jane Cochrane, William L??? (Looks like Landen or London) John Cuthbert.
So you were right...the census was wrong.
Sue
PS Was actually looking for California marriages but there is a gapafter 1877, so cannot find a marriage for David.Last edited by sue2white; 01-08-2009 at 8:05 AM. Reason: PS

Hi All,
As the header for this thread says Epsom, which is in Surrey, I have moved the thread to that forum as the surname board is only for listing surnames.
