    Question amy/emma

    hi my ggrandmother's name was
Amy but two census back she becomes Emma all other family members remain the same.
has any one heard of these names being linked.
have found birth certificate for Emma and death for Amy neither in opposite names can they be the same person?

    WEll, Anne

In those days - not so long ago - few could read and fewer write
And the local accents were often strange to the person making the record (at least they could write)
So do not worry about Amy vs Emma - is was probably the poor censor's best attempt to write the sound he heard! (With nobody present able to put him right)

It depends on who gave the information for the death cert, maybe they only knew her as Amy, also make sure that you are looking at the right family in the census, it does happen that two families can have the same children's names.

I've also got Emmie instead of Amy.Amy on her birth marriage and death certificate but Emmie on one Census.
