I have been researching my great grandfather Ernest Henry Hart b London 1867 who settled in Johannesburg circa 1902-1905. It is my very recent understanding that he divorced his first wife Adelaide Hart nee Yzerman in 1905- the National Archives show a petition for divorce on behalf of Adelaide in 1905. His daughter Constance Amelia b 1889 is my grandmother. Ernest's parents were Henry Chapman Hart b 1838-1913 and Amelia Hart b1841-1928
I understand that Ernest re-married possibly to an Elizabeth ( Lizzie) surname unknown that he had other children from that marriage including Bernard, Ruby, Lionel, Marie, Clive who were born around Gauten Johannesburg. My data on Ernest and his parents and ancestry pre South Africa is extensive but I know very little about Ernest post 1900. His sister Constance b 1866 London married Albert Santa Maria and the family settled in Rome circa early 1900s or earlier. I have no knowledge of this family.
If any researchers have connections to the families I would welcome contact.

Looks as if he may have been involved in some court cases. See NAAIRS entries here.
These records are in Transvaal so you can get copies via eggsa.org
There are also some Crawcour references
Well worth having a browse around the NAAIRS site

ERNEST HENRY HART- JOHANNESBURG-GAUTENG
Many thanks Sue for the SA link- the documents confirm that Ernest was in SA from at least 1905-1916. I know from another site that his descendants were living in the Gauteng area from the early 1900s until the 1970s and may well still be in the area.
This is data from the GRO death certificate of Ernest Henry Hart's mother ( my 2x great grandmother) Amelia Hart.

ELIZABETH SHAW -ERNEST HENRY HART
For my SA Hart relatives- I hold the Divorce Papers for 1905 relating to Ernest Henry Hart and Adelaide Hart nee Yzerman. These papers also refer to the relationship between Ernest and Elizabeth Shaw and state that Ernest was a Commission Agent in South Africa having left Adelaide some 4 years earlier. The known address for Ernest in 1905 was c/o Alfred Elman Box 5879 Johannesburg SA. The Divorce petition which was uncontested refers to addresses in 1904 where Elizabeth and Ernest had lived namely 36 Cleveland Mansions Chapel St Brixton and 5 Coliseum Terrace Gt Portland St.
An earlier 1892 Divorce Petition by Ernest against Adelaide and a co-respondent was rejected.
If my Hart relatives are interested in the documents please contact me.

Hi
I hope you are still in touch with this site!
I have been researching a West End club where my ancestor Frederick Wyatt worked as M.C and Dancing Master.
This was run by Alfred Elman and Joe Graham, until 1896, I am fascinated to find any reference to them

ERNEST HART
In reply to the last message I can't add any details because I have no knowledge of how my great grandfather became involved in a club. This background had no relationship to his parents work or his own family background. Ernest's parents were Anglo Jews and his father Henry had several jobs including commission agent and later solicitor's managing clerk. Henry was the son of John Hart and Elizabeth Jacobs and was a tailor when he married. The Hart family and the Jacobs had been in the UK circa 1760s as tailors and glass manufacturers. There were no other relatives involved in comparable work to Ernest.
When Ernest went to SA he was a commission agent but I have no knowledge as to what specialist area of trade or products.

WINIFRED AMELIA HART -BORN 1903 KENNINGTON
For my South African Hart relatives here is the Birth Certificate for Winifred Amelia Hart. The certificate confirms that Winifred was born in Kennington London. Importantly, the real maiden name for her mother was Shaw but on the birth certificate it is given as Hart which is a mystery given the divorce records for her father Ernest Henry Hart and his wife Adelaide Hart nee Yzerman naming Elizabeth Shaw as a co-respondent and giving 36 Cleveland Mansions as a former address for Ernest and Elizabeth.
15 June 1903 -36 Cleveland Mansions - WINIFRED AMELIA - father- ERNEST HENRY HART - Mother- ELIZABETH HART formerly HART- Occupation of father Commission Agent- Signature , description and residence of informant - E H HART father- 36 Cleveland Mansions Cahpel Street - Registered 23 July 1903
Given the various newspaper accounts of Ernest Henry Hart and his move to South Africa with Elizabeth and the lack of a formal divorce due to Adelaide failing to proceed with final settlement it maybe no surprise that Ernest covered up his English marriage and the fact that he also had a daughter Constance Amelia who my South African relatives knew nothing about. Who Elizabeth Shaw aka Hart parents were and her origins remains a continuing puzzle.
