Default NORWICH JEW'S BURIAL GROUND- MEMORIALS

As part of the many records I hold on my Crawcour relatives I am posting a summary of the names and inscriptions of the Jews buried in the 'Jew's Closed Burial Ground Quaker's Lane St Martin at Oak Norwich'. These records appear in two early undated newspaper records I hold. The burial ground still exists and there were photographs of some of the graves taken in 1935. I am unaware of what currently exists of the cemetery but these are the names of those buried in the cemetery and also importantly one of the records contains a brief description of the person by someone who knew them.
I hope this maybe of use to those researchers who had ancestors living in Norwich circa 1830s- to cemetery closure.

The National Society for Preserving Memorials of the Dead published in the Norfolk News. Particulars of the Jew's closed burial ground situated in Quaker's Lane St Martin at Oak: This ground is about half up the lane, west side...

Nb It has been difficult to read all the entries clearly from the copy of the article and the EDP newspaper in Norwich holds original copies of some of the main Norfolk and Norwich newspapers dating back to the 1700s.

In the article which appeared in the Norwich Argus ( date unknown) there appears the following account:
'The Jews once formed a big colony in Norwich as is evidenced by their burial grounds north and south of the old city. They are pleased to term the graveyard a 'House of the Living' ( Bais Chayim), which it was actually at the moment of 'the chosen people' selecting a fresh site for burying their dead about thirty years ago, when the Burials Act came in force, intramural internment being no longer permitted, and the congregation succeeded in making terms through a corelioginsist ( Mr Councillor Fox) for a plot of land adjoining the present cemetery at Heigham... The Jewish God's Acre in use at that time in Quaker's Lane St Martin's was full of graves, and surrounded on all four sides by cottages.....I visited this same old spot now overgrown with flowers and shrubs, the other day, and meditated among the tombs, carring back my mind to many of the Israelites I had known forty years ago.
First I came to the garve of the dark eyed maiden ( Catherine Moses) who was cut off by a rapid stroke of consumption at the aerly age of 16. Next her lie the remains of Alcy and Lewis Bendon wife and son of a native of Morocco who long resided on Elm Hill. Close by are interred the remains of Mrs Louise White and Eve Cohen brought from Yarmouth on account of there being no Jewish burial ground in that town. Next beside his wife Rebecca we have Harris Nathan, whose venerable commanding presence and snowy beard reaching to his girdle caused him to be a prominent figure in the city. Further on we have resting the gentle wife of the Town Councillor above named , and just beyond Lyon..'a sincere friend to the needy, and a well wisher to all mankind'.
Bernard Crawcour a dentist appears to be the first person buried here as his gravestone bears the date 25 September 5595. This gentleman is said to have founded the now disused Jewish Synagogue near St. George's Tombland Church, and lost one of his legs by a carriage accident. lastly, I read of one Simon Aaron, a jeweller, who lovely daughter was for years a talk of the countryside.'

I hope that researchers find the above useful.

This and following posts provide where possible additional data on the individuals named in the original post I wrote in 2009. The purpose of this belated follow up is to provide researchers who have these individuals in their family genealogy with links to the Gildencroft Jewish Cemetery which closed circa 1854.
Cemetery Scribes website blog has photographs of the clearance work at the cemetery but the remaining tombstones appear to be a very small remnant of those shown in a b/w photograph of the cemetery circa 1935/36.

As a start, Lewis Bandan who died aged 23 years was the son of Moses Bandan originally from Morocco.

In this post I will provide data on Anthony White and his wife Louise see #1 of this thread. The data does not follow up on their children but census records exist for them. In addition, I will post data on Joel Fox who held important posts in the Norwich Synagogue and as a Town Councillor and Board Guardian in Norwich.

There is a very good b/w photograph of the Jews' Burial Ground Gildencroft taken in 1937 by George Plunkett see website George Plunkett Norwich Monuments/Memorials 1937-03-26

The photograph shows a well maintained cemetery and I can count 7 standing tombstones but cannot read any inscriptions because of the photograph size ( I don't know if it would be possible to enlarge the original to see if any inscriptions were visible)

The photograph has the following comment...
" When slum property was being cleared away between Oak Street and Quaker's Lane in 1936 a little known Jewish Cemetery was brought to view. Although no longer used for burials it was still being attractively gardened by a caretaker appointed by the city's Jewish Community. Ten headstones, some with Hebrew inscriptions, testified to the one time use of this small plot which was opened for burials in 1813 and closed in 1856 when the Corporation cemetery at Bowthorpe Road was opened.
There had been an earlier cemetery on a site at the top of Mariner's Lane, Ber Street granted by the Corporation early in the 18th C. The cemetery had been used by the whole of the eastern counties until closed about a century later, but on the other hand this one at Oak Street adjoining Talbot Square was used by the Norwich Community only."

I will post early accounts of the Jewish Burial grounds.

An important person missing from the census for Mosaic aka Moses Bandan and his wife Alice Keyzor aka Kyezor is their son Abraham born Norwich circa 1823-25.
Abraham changed his surname to that of his uncle Michael Keyzor and they entered into partnership as opticians see Michael and Abraham Keyzor 24 Castle Mead Norwich list of designs double spectacles in Mechanics Magazine J Knight 1846

The following newspaper record is for Catherine Moses see#1 and 2- 7 Dec 1850 Norfolk Chronicle
"On the ult. the residence of her uncle, Miss Catherine Moses, niece of Mr Philip COHEN orange merchant Swan Lane, in this city aged 10"
It is possible that the age of Catherine Moses in the newspaper account is either in correct or else her tombstone transcription giving an age of 16 is incorrect.
