Hi there, apologies I'm a bit late to this thread but my great-grandfather was Stefano Besagni born in Italy (place unknown) on the 12th or 13th December 1887. He moved to Abertillery (Cwmtillery) where he was a colliery labourer. I can't find him on the 1911 census, but he changed his name to Steve Bezani and married my great-grandmother on Christmas day 1915. I'm told he had two brothers but we don't know if they were definitely in the UK. If they were, they may have kept the original spelling, or changed it in a different way. we also know he had an "old Aunt in Clerkenwell". According to his marriage certificate his dad was called John - presumably Giovanni Besagni. I noticed there are Besagni relations in this thread and connections to Abertillery and I wondered if any of these names rang any bells. Thanks, Julia

Not many bells ringing 
My relations all came from around the Bardi region in Northern Italy.
Not got many records on the Besagni front. You probably know theses ones.

From 1901 Census
Peter Besagni (Besagne) age 31 from Morfosso Italy in Monmouthshire (Abersychan?) Who was a Fried Fish Dealer
Luigi Besagni (Bisigni) age 19 from Italy in London.
On the 1911 Census there are some Besagno’s (Besagni ?) which you probably know about !

Your Stefano’s Father Giovanni (John) would I estimate be born around early 1860s, I have a couple of record from a distant cousins Rootsweb that may be of help ? Not direct lines but possibly related if your family had been from around the Bardi region.
