    Default Godharz Rose/Brierley

1864- in queensland Godharz rose married Nancy Brierley
I have been looking for many years for the family of Godharz Rose I have no idea how he got to Australia as i have not found him on any passenger lists or crew list i found his naturalisation certificate
on diffrent bits and peices of documents it states he is from Amsterdam, Prussia even netherlands.I have not been able to find any clues on him as to where he is from. The family story changes from person to person and each has a diffrent one to tell.

Godharz isnt a very popular name in fact ive seen it 3 times so far once as his sons middle name and once on this guy who i do not know where he came from and would love any info any one can give me:

1896- in queensland a Cornelia jane smith married a godharz james Brierley there is a newspaper classified inviting friends to attend the funeral of his infant son Albert Francis.

any clues as to what i should do ?

basically if you put into google the name Godharz all i get are my own posts and some census records.

Do you have the marriage certificate for Godharz and Nancy?

There are electoral roll records for a Godharz ROSE and Nancy living at Rosenberg Cottage, Exeter Street, West End Qld for the years 1903 to 1925. His 1903 occupation was engineer and the following year, labourer.

An 1896 marriage in Queensland should have his birth place and parents recorded. Also the birth certificates of his children should also show his birthplace.

Hi Haylierose, did you ever have any success with locating the birthplace and / or arrival to Australia details of Godharz Rose?

He was my great great grandfather and I have also had no success in confirming this information. I note that when his first child Abraham was born in Qld in 1867 his name is listed as Gotthard Rose. There is some rumor in my side of the family that Godharz was originally from Germany. From what I've seen Gotthard is a name used by persons from Germany. Gott is also the German word for God.

Gotthard apparently is the German patron saint of traveling merchants and is also 'invoked by those in peril at sea'. I was also wondering if there was a name change if this was linked someway to the name of his cottage here in Brisbane (i.e. was the choice of the surname Rose linked to 'Rosenberg').

If Godharz was a mariner and left his ship in Australia without permission he would have been classified as a 'ship deserter' and liable to arrest by local authorities and return to his ship. From what I've read over 3,000 mariners jumped ship whilst in Qld ports during the 19th century. Maybe a reason for a name change?

There is some information on the ship Rockhampton which you may have not have seen previously which is accessible via this link. https://espace.library.uq.edu.au/vie...78_10_3_21.pdf
