    Default merchant seaman grandad

    Hello.

Would anyone know if there was any central office to enlist to the Merchant Nvy c.1893 onwards?

My great grandfather was a cook onboard and all I know is that one of his journeys took him to India. Which ports may he have sailed from?

He was from Great sampford, Essex if that helps.

Many thanks in advance to anyone that replies.

    Sean

If he was still in the Merchant Navy in 1918, you might stand a chance of finding something. See https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...sLeafletID=128

You may find the book mentioned at the end of the guide useful - Christropher Watts, My ancestor was a merchant seaman: how can I find out more about him?

I think you may be able to get a copy through Parish Chest.

    Default Merchant Navy records

You may wish to contact Trinity House, Trinity House Lane, Hull. These keep all merchant navy records. I managed to get each ship my great grandfather sailed on including dates. Write to them and give it a try it may be worth it.
