Default Elizabeth Charman b abt 1799 Capel, Surrey

    Hi there,

I'm looking for the birth/bap of Elizabeth Charman who married Thomas Gough (Goff) in 1820 in Dorking. Later census returns indicate a birthdate of abt 1799 at Capel.

can anyone help with Capel records?

    regards birdlip

Looks like Elizabeth may have had a couple of siblings:

    Jane: 21 APR 1793
    Parents: John Charman and Jane

    Mary: 10 JAN 1802
Parents: John Charman (no mother named)

    William: 03 JUN 1804
Parents: John Charman (no mother named)

    There is also this:
    Ann: 03 DEC 1797
Parents: Jane Charman (no father named)

    They all appear here:

    Batch No.: C071471
    Dates: 1653-1812
    Source Call No.: 0991700
    Type: Film
    Printout Call No.: 6906199

Thanks very much for all that Jan.

How curious that the SECOND child of the marriage has no father listed. You often find it with the first, don't you, if its before the marriage. Though the child would usually have the mothers surname then. Perhaps the father was away fighting in the Napoleonic wars? Hmm...

Or.... the Jane Charman mentioned is not the Jane married to John. Could be his sister?

Perhaps if you could order the films from a Family History Centre and view them, you may pick up some more clues.

Thats true...it could be a sister. I'll see what I can turn up. Thanks again.

I think Parish Chest has the Burials for Capel and surrounding areas.
    May help eliminate some.

mardenhistory.org.uk has some poor law records re the removal of people from Tudely and Capel to Marden.
