Default Cordwainer, Lee Kent 1817, Originally from Essex.

    Hi

My great, great, great grandmother was Louisa Britton who married Frederick Stokes in Witham, Essex in 1839. Louisa was born in 1817 in Lee, Lewisham in Kent. She was baptised there in 1817 at St Margaret daughter of John and Sarah Britton. Her father John was a cordwainer according to her 1839 wedding and her father on the 1841 census. John lived intul 1862 and was born in about 1774 in Felstead, Essex according to 1851 and 1861 censuses. I dont yet know when he wed Sarah.

I would like to try and narrow down when they moved to Kent and when they moved back to Essex. If he was a cordwainer, should he be listed in directories?

    Thanks

    Ben

He may well be listed in directories if he worked on his own account. If he was born in 1774 you may find him among the apprenticeship records

I've looked in the 1840 Pigot's Directory for Kent.
John Britton is not mentioned in the trade section.

    Hi Peter

    Thanks for the link.

I wonder if local RO's will have any more directories? But I think an apprenticeship indenture may be a start.
