If you are researching Cotton family history, contact Ross Cotton, the Guild of One-Name Studies member specialising in Cotton family history research. He may have records of your Cotton ancestors, but if not would like to assist with any research you are doing.
Currently he is researching Cotton families originating from the Isle of Wight and would be interested to hear from Cottons with IoW ancestors.

Hi
I am a historian investigating the history of a property in Essex (UK) owned by a rich clothier called Thomas Paycocke (d.1518). In Paycocke's will his second wife is named as an Anne Cotton. Other members of her father are also named, being her father George Cotton, her brothers ('brethren') Richard and William Cotton, and her sister Eleanor Cotton. Anne was still alive in 1518 and may have lived up to the 1530s. Anne was pregnant when Thomas died and subsequently had a daughter (I know this from later court cases in Chancery) but the girl is unnamed and I do not know whether she survived. She was disinherited anyway because Thomas Paycocke entailed his estate to his male heirs (the male children of his brothers).
It is a very long shot but I wondered whether you have any information on Cottons as far back as the 16th century? There was a link between Essex and the north-west of England, as a certain John Cotton - of the family established in Staffordshire and Cheshire - married Alice Langham the heiress of the manors of Panfield Hall and Hempsted Hall (both Essex) in the late 15th century. However, none of the names match up, so Anne Cotton and her family are clearly another branch.
all the best
Chris

Has anyone researched the Cottons of Derby? I know from family folklore that we are descended from John Cotton (1585 – 1652) who left the UK to become minister to the English Puritans (who went to America on the Mayflower). I have only been able to trace the family back to John Cotton 1789 in Derby but there is a 100 year or so gap - I think we maybe descended from John Cotton's grandson Roland (son of Seaborn through his second marriage) who returned to the UK, but have been unable to establish this. Any help much appreciated.

Cottons Freshwater
My mothers family are Cottons from the Freshwater area, my grandad Joseph Cotten lived in Colwell Bay until his death in the late 80's, he had several brothers and sisters who also lived in the area.
I would like to find out more about this side of my family, we used to holiday in the IOW when I was a child.

Dear Member
The Cotton Family - Derbyshire - My information is taken from the FAMILY SEARCH.org website and I recommend that other members us it too.
I am particulary interested in a JOANE Cotton, born c1560, possibly in the village of Morton, near Alfreton, Derbyshire.
Joane married William Hardwick (from a junior branch of the Hardwicks of Hardwick Hall). They married at the Church of the Holy Cross, at Morton, 29 January 1580. They lived at Astwith House, Stainesby, juxta Hardwick Estate. The Hardwick estate was transferred, circa 1589 from the Hardwicks to the Cavendish family - Dukes of Devonshire, the matriarch of which is BESS of HARDWICK, Elizabeth Hardwick born 1520. Her fourth husband was Lord George Talbot 6th EARL of Shrewsbury.
William Hardwick and Joane Cotton had a son James. He died in 1649 - I have a copy his Will.
Does anyone know who Joane's parents are?
Is Joane is related to Rowland Cotton - lawyer of Derby and father of REV John Cotton, baptised 15 December 1584 and who went to THE NEW WORLD
I also need information on the parents of Thomas Hardwick, baptised 1662 at All Saints Church, Heath, Chesterfield and husband of Easter/Esther Watkinson. They married at St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield 10 January 1689.
