    Default Missing from 1901 census

My gandfather Alfred George Rowley born Dec 1879 is missing from the 1901 census (at least I can find him!). This led me to think he might have been away at the Boer War for two reasons
1 He was a Barnado's boy in the 1891 census and they encouraged boys to join the military
2 He became blind round about 1906, and the family tale was that he had "sun poisoning". Now I dont think that would be possible in smoky, foggy London!

Where can I look to see if he was with the military in South Africa?

The National Archives (TNA) at Kew holds most records. See their research guides on Army records - look at the links prefixed 'British Army'.

Could he have joined the RN and landed with the Naval Brigade? - Search the Seamen's services on TNA's documents online.

Have since found that he went to Canada with Dr Barnardos, but was sent back because of poor eyesight. Eventually found him in the 1911 census, married with 2 children (my father & his sister)
