They are on the 1891 census in Battersea

Swiss archives may be found here: https://www.staatsarchiv.zh.ch/archivalien.php

Methinks you will need someone who speaks German...

However, if you shoot an email off to them, they will probably have people there who speak English Click on "Kontakt" on the left-hand side of the page and it will take you through to their email address.

    Good luck!

Uh-uh! French, maybe - German, no. The only useful German that I know is how to ask for a cup of coffee!

They probably speak better English than my French, anyway...

Hey, I've just seen your post, and was wondering if you've had any luck with the guys in Zurich about this one?
I work in that city, so let me know if I can help.
If they've not come back to you, you should note that the link above was for the Cantonal, not national archives. Switzerland is divided into 26 fairly independent Cantons. It would make a big difference if you knew which canton William Mathis was born in. It could also be (Swiss-)German, Italian or French speaking, though Mathis sounds more like a German name.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help at all.
