Difficult from Australia.......
The British Library Newspaper Collection at Colindale is the major repository, copies of newspapers can be pruchased on film, but you would need to know the paper. The BL site, aboe gives a link through to a commercial site which may contain a record.

Liverpool Newspapers
There were several published at that period, though most news seems to have appeared in all of them. If you can narrow the field, by date, or any names, one of the Scousers here may be able to have a look, but it takes a while and much eyestrain to work through a year of microfilm.

If you sign up for the free trial with GALE newspapers, there are a couple of rape cases (both acquitted) at the Summer Liverpool Assizes (reported in the Preston Guardian). With the name and date to search on you may find what you are looking for.

The Liverpool Mercury would be the one to look at. But the print is very small & it will take you a long time to read through it.
