Broughton of Oadby

I am just beginning to put the threads together on my wife's family tree but have hit a stonewall immediately. Does anyone have any info on a family of Broughtons in Oadby around the start of the 1900s. Father Albert, mother Elizabeth (nee Bettony) and son Clifford (born c. 1905)? I would be most grateful

Have you tried any of the usual online sites? For example in FreeBMD there is the following entry easily found under the Dec. 1905 quarter

Broughton Cliford Raymond Blaby 7a 29

There are loads of Broughtons to be found on this site.

Also what about the 1881 census freely available on https://www.familysearch.org/? You may not find them in Oadby but you could search on the names to see whether they were living somewhere else in the county 20 years previously.

I'm sure that lots of posters on this site can do lookups for you but if you are just starting out, as you imply, it is far more fun and you'll get much more satisfaction from doing it yourself. However, if you've tried them all and still hit a brick wall this is just the forum for you. So if you let us know whether you are familiar with free sites like the above or not we can see whether you have a big brickwall or just a couple of courses of bricks to step over.

In 1901 the BETTONEY family are in Oadby.

The marriage is on FreeBMD
Marriages Dec 1904 Bettoney Elizabeth Ann Blaby 7a95 BROUGHTON Albert Blaby 7a95

If you send for the marriage cert you will get Albert's father's name and occupation - should help with locating the family in 1901.

Thanks Tony of Hampshire, I have already started on 'Roots' with some satisfaction, as you say and I am now fairly sure the 1880 one is right. Thanks Davran of Monkton, that has saved me a bit of work. Thanks for the Bettony info from Sue of Roose Point, my wife is very concerned that I gather all the female line info possible. What is the '1920 Coal House'?
